You have big ideas…
…but getting them published requires attention to pesky details that you don’t have time for. That’s where I can help!
Does this sound familiar?
- Your writing time is so fragmented that it’s hard to maintain a consistent voice through multiple writing sessions.
- You are highly motivated in the early stages of drafting your manuscript, then frustrated and burned out by the process of turning it into a finished document.
- You are publishing research drawn from your thesis or dissertation, and it needs to be adapted for a new audience.
- You wrote your manuscript using one style guide, and now you are submitting it to a publisher who uses a different style guide.
What I bring to the table

- Deep expertise with academic research in social sciences (anthropology, sociology), human services (social work, counseling, education), and humanities (music, critical theory). As a solo author, I have published 2 peer reviewed articles and 5 film/book reviews in academic journals.
- Versatile editing experience. I have reviewed over 40 manuscripts in fields including social sciences, human services, education, business, and engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of APA, MLA, and Chicago styles.
- A client-centered approach that seeks to discover the strengths of your writing and to enhance your unique voice.
- A patient, nonjudgmental personal style.
About me

I have pursued careers in music, humanities, and mental health in order to facilitate the empowerment of individuals and communities. After nine years as a faculty member (2004-2013), I left academia in search of opportunities with more practical impact. My career outside academia has included 5 years of experience as a music program director for a church, 10 years as a transcriptionist and editor for an audio transcription firm, and 8 years as a clinician and training coordinator for a public sector mental health agency.
My passions are to help you to achieve your mission sustainably and to realize the potential of your ideals. I provide support by drawing on my eclectic combination of skills: precise writing and editing, structured interviewing, ethnography, qualitative and quantitative research, program management, and creativity.

“Duncan is the epitome of professional: he is incredibly hard working, always – no matter what – has a positive attitude, pays attention to fine details and has good follow-through. In addition to being excellent with people, he is respectful, eloquent, incredibly intelligent, and is always thinking on his toes and coming up with innovative solutions to new problems that arise. Duncan is truly one of the most patient people I have ever met, and I find his management finesse highly effective. Duncan has a remarkable effect on people: everyone feels respected and happy to work for and with him.”
